Scoring Examples

A few examples might help clarify what can seem complicated.

Example: series scores 

Here's a simple case where a fleet holds 5 races in a series. We'll look at two of the boats to calculate their series scores.

Race scores

	Race 1	Race 2	Race 3	Race 4	Race 5
J-22	2	4	3	2	3
J-80	4	3	5	1	2

Note that at this point, the type of boat or its handicap no longer matters. Series scoring requires only the finish places for each boat. 

J-22: 2 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 14
J-80: 4 + 3 + 5 + 1 + 2 = 15

The result for the series is the J-22 (14 points) beats the J-80 (15 points), ignoring any throw-out races.

Example: series with throw outs

In the above example, if the series allows 1 throw-out race, we drop the highest single race score for each boat. For the J-22, that is the 4 points for Race 2, while for the J-80 it is the 5 points for Race 3. Summing the remaining scores yields a tie.

J-22: 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 10
J-80: 4 + 3 + 1 + 2 = 10

That of course brings up the subject of tie breaking, but I'm not ready to go there yet. I'm going out to dinner instead.

Example: calculate corrected time

Calculate corrected time for a J-80

Table: J-80 handicap is 117.
  (Don't like the J-80's handicap? Talk to the fleet captain, NOT the scorekeeper!)

Correction Factor = 650 / (550 + 117)

Correction Factor = 650 / 667

Correction Factor = 0.9745

Verify that the table has the right Correction Factor. 
  (If not, tell the scorekeeper, he'll handle that one.)

Calculate elapsed time 

Elapsed time = 1:03:11.2

Convert to seconds

Elapsed time = (1 * 3600) + (3 * 60) + 11.2

Elapsed time = 3600 + 180 + 11.2

Elapsed time = 3791.2 seconds

Calculate corrected time 

Corrected Time = (Correction Factor) * (Elapsed Time)

Corrected Time = 0.9745 * 3791.2

Corrected Time = 3694.5244

Corrected Time = 3695
  (Rounded to nearest whole second, up in this case.)
